I sent a very rough first draft to one of my favorite beta readers for some directional feedback, and I got some great insights into what is missing and where some more meat on the bones is needed.

I love the concept! There’s a psychological aspect to this dystopian story. It has an almost horror/sci-fi edge to it, and that’s not something that I’ve seen done before. It feels very much like I was watching an old-school sci-fi movie, and I absolutely loved that vibe.
I have done some more work on the story, and I will be sending it off to another reader to get their thoughts, and I will do some more work on the bits that need more work, and plan to publish the story in Jan / Feb 2025.
