The story that follows reminds me of an almost Watchmen-esque alternate history. Not only did I find the concept fascinating, but the story is very character-driven, and I found myself desperately wanting to know what was going to happen to the young men.
I definitely strongly recommend!

One of the Nazi “conspiracy theories” is the attempt at creating Aryan Super Soldiers. This book, or series, is an expansion on the story. And it’s an excellent one. Doctor Krautkramer develops a serum, which when injected into young boys and energized by gamma rays, has a low probability of creating a “superman”. It takes three attempts to get to the ultimate superbeing. Only one in a hundred boys survive each attempt, and by the end of WWII, only one third stage super solder is made.
At the end of the war, the “good” doctor and his creation are taken to the States, and the project begins again. Three more super soldiers are created, and their influence on history is relayed to the reader. It’s pretty intense.
One of the creations is super-good; the other is super-evil. The other two turn out to be, well, cannon fodder. They’re killed off much easier that one might expect of super beings. Ultimately, there is a good vs. evil confrontation. The sole remaining super soldier, who may well be immortal and unkillable, is marooned on Mars, being the only human who can withstand the conditions there.
The story, writing, and world building in this story is exceptional. One of the best I’ve read in a long time. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I now have the second book in my queue. I look forward to reading it!
