I realized that I haven’t ever posted about my favorite story that I have written – Annabelle.
There are a number of reasons I like Annabelle so much.
I am a huge fan of Bret Easton Ellis’ writing – and he has had a huge influence on my writing, as well as my writing style. All of Ellis’ stories mix harrowing and dark narratives with perverse moments of humor. With Annabelle I wanted to capture this – and I think that the humor I wrote in Annabelle is some of the best I have written.
Another reason is the first few chapters are a hard read – and brutal. But throughout all of this, I hoped to immerse the reader in the mind of a psychopath so that they could almost feel his skin and be creeped out. The first few chapters are hard work – but worth it to enjoy what is to come.
The third reason I enjoy Annabelle so much is that it is so very wicked. Again, like Bret Easton Ellis’ work, there are no punches pulled – and I hoped to take the reader on a journey that left them disorientated, uncomfortable, and unsure. As this review from Amazon shows, I think I hit the nail on the head.
After about 4 chapters, I had to stop. Not because it wasn’t good but because my brain had to switch gears. The alien aspect really threw me off. This book had me feeling like I had a nervous breakdown, then recuperated, then went crazy again. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I hope that you get a chance to read – and that you too can feel like you had a nervous breakdown, then recuperated, then went crazy again!
