March Writing Update

So spring has sprung, and it is still snowing and sleeting and freezing in Toronto. That’s okay, as I am sure it will be nice and warm soon – and then cycling season will be upon us!

I have received back some feedback from a beta reader for Age of Magic, and they said…

One of my favorite aspects of the manuscript, (was) the overall feel and worldbuilding. From the beginning, I felt very present in the world. I mention this several times in the manuscript, but I just felt that fairy tale vibe and really was excited to explore it. It felt more like Grimm’s fairy tales, rather than the Disney/happy version, and it made me want to explore the story even more. That the gore and darkness isn’t held back definitely was a positive for me. I also really enjoyed the politics of the story as we got further into the plot. The way Barnabus took down Duke by Duke, through marriage and death, was super engaging to follow as a reader. And because the descriptions and the world felt well-described, I didn’t feel overwhelmed by the dukedoms.

I think the story has one more set of revisions to go, and then it will be a done deal and can just sit and wait until October when I publish it.

I am making good progress on the sequel to Age of Magic, which has the working title of Sphinx’s Tear. I have 41k words written so far, which I am pleased about. The story has gotten a bit knotty in places, and probably doesn’t read very well at the moment, and is probably not in that great shape, but I will keep plugging away to get the first draft done, and then I will start work on giving it a bit of a shine.

I have received a couple of new reviews for Golden Blood as well, with Iron Canuck saying here that the story had “Plenty of action, moments of horror, and even humanity.” And TTC Books said in a review here, “The end was surprising, but I really liked it.

I will leave you with a little timelapse video I filmed on a short vacation to Quebec City of the St. Lawrence River.

Have fun!
